In the biochemical field, Unitika took initiative in establishing the manufacturing technologies of thermostable enzymes ahead of the world. Together with our outstanding skills for purification, Unitika has produced enzymes with excellent qualities. Versatile enzymes such as Diaphorase and Dehydrogenase have been used for various applications which require superior stability and purity. In addition, Unitika has taken advantage of genetic recombination for the enzyme production from our early stage, and kept introducing enzymes meet a wide variety of customer's demands. On the other hand, by making the most use of the application technologies of thermostable enzymes, Unitika has developed unique reagents for clinical chemistry. Unitika has created various medical devices and sent them out to the world. Anti-thrombogenic catheters for transfusion, drainage, and extracorporeal circulation, and "Beschitin" a wound dressing product are typical examples. The anti-thrombogenic catheters have Urokinase, an enzyme having the anti-thrombogenic activity, immobilized on the surface of the catheters. Presently, the catheters are extensively used at clinics and hospitals in Japan. "Beschitin" is the wound dressing made from highly purified chitin extracted from the crab. Unitika has developed "Vetechitin" to an animal use, too.
