1. Chemical structual formula
Polyarylate resin is a general term of thermoplastic aromatic polyester that consists of polycondensate of dihydric phenol and dibasic acid.
A representative polyarylate resin is U-polymer [U-100]; a transparent, highly heat-resistant, amorphous thermoplastic super engineering plastic. UNITIKA industrialized earlier than any other company in the world. [U-100] has the following chemical structure:

2. Mechanical characteristic
UNIFINER has excellent mechanical strength (toughness) that the conventional transparent resin does not have.
The surface hardness is high and equivalent to the HB class of the pencil hardness.
3. Weathering durability
Polyarylate resin has great ultraviolet absorption capacity and high weathering durability. Polyarylate resin has such characteristics, because it absorbs ultraviolet energy and causes Fries rearrangement reaction, producing a benzophenone structure on the resin surface. (Refer to the figure below.) This allows polyarylate resin to block light of 400 nm or less. The Fries rearrangement reaction changes the tone of color (yellowing), hardly affecting the transparency.
4. Electrical properties
The dielectric breakdown strength is higher than any other kind of thermoplastic resin.
The volume resistivity is high, indicating insulation properties.
The insulation properties do not diminish even at high temperatures and after heat aging, ensuring stable electrical properties.
The dielectric constant (ε) and dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) are stable in wide temperature and frequency ranges.
5. Chemical resistance
Polyarylate resin is amorphous, having ester bonds in the backbone; therefore, there is a limit to the resistance to alkalis, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, and heated water (steam). Caution should be exercised. Furthermore, attention should be paid to the resistance to solvents in the case of the types with increased solvent-solubility.
